Concentrated Plasma Therapy

Platelets naturally occur in your own blood and part of their function is to stimulate healing.

Concentrated Plasma Therapy, which is also referred to as ACP-Autologous Concentrated Plasma, is a concentrated mixture of platelets from your own blood that is used to treat a number of orthopaedic conditions, including osteoarthritis, tendonitis and many soft tissue sports injuries.

Recreational or serious physical activity can often be restricted by osteoarthritis, which can be prohibitive for many patients as they would like to remain physically active. Typical symptoms in the early stage of osteoarthritis can include joint ache, morning stiffness and pain after long periods of inactivity that often subsides after a short walk. These symptoms can be painful and are caused by wear and tear of the joint cartilage.

The healing of injured or inflamed tissue involves a complex and precisely regulated series of natural processes within the body, and platelets play an important role in this process. At the site of injury platelets release growth factors that stimulate the restoration of injured tissue and inhibit painful inflammatory processes.

When Concentrated Plasma Therapy May Help

It is recommended for patients with painful mild to moderate osteoarthritis and it can also provide significant relief in tendonitis. It can support the healing process involved in ligament, tendon and muscle injuries. Also, if you are currently in rehabilitation or are being treated for a sports injury, it can support your body’s own self-healing processes.

Conditions Treated

After or during your initial consultation:

  • blood is drawn from a vein in the arm and put through a separation process to extract the concentration of platelets.
  • The platelets are then injected into the affected site, either with or without ultrasound guidance.
  • The process takes about 30 minutes and is done in an outpatient setting.
  • Your consultant will discuss the best treatment plan for you, which may include a series of injections and may recommend physical therapy to maximise the results

We offer self-pay packages for Concentrated Plasma Therapy, starting at £1350 for a series of three injections. If patients are insured, we advise to gain authorisation from your insurer prior to booking.
