Specialists in Biological Treatments

New non-surgical treatments are rapidly being developed within the field of orthopaedics. Several new biological treatments are now available in the UK that can help relieve joint pain from conditions such as osteoarthritis. These biological treatments may help your body get the most out of your natural tissues and could prolong the need for surgery.

These non-surgical or minimally invasive surgical treatments use your own blood, bone marrow or body fat, to promote natural healing in the painful joint after being injected. These biological procedures harness the beneficial effects of the anti-inflammatory mediators to stimulate repair of the body’s worn out tissues. They are normally done without general anaesthetic in an outpatient or day-case setting.

Biological treatments may help with the following conditions:

Different non-surgical biological treatment options are available with Total Orthopaedics at several London locations. At the initial consultation, your consultant will discuss your medical history and may request a scan such as an x-ray or MRI to help diagnose and assess your condition. Depending on your diagnosis, treatment options and recommendations will then be discussed with your surgeon.

Non-surgical Biological Treatment Options

Concentrated Plasma Therapy

Concentrated Plasma Therapy, which is also referred to as ACP-Autologous Concentrated Plasma, uses a concentrated mixture of platelets from your own blood. Platelets play an important role in the recovery of injured or inflamed tissues within the body. Upon injury, platelets release growth factors that inhibit inflammation and promote tissue healing. It is used to treat a number of orthopaedic conditions, including osteoarthritis, tendonitis and many soft tissue sports injuries.

nSTRIDE APS (Autologous Protein Solution)

nSTRIDE concentrates anti-inflammatory cytokines (small proteins that are important in cell signaling) and growth factors to prevent the breakdown of cartilage cells. It also enhances the growth factors that can help stimulate cartilage cell regrowth. Similar to Concentrated Plasma Therapy it uses your own blood platelets, however it concentrates the blood in two stages to enhance its potential and is offered as a single injection.

Bone Marrow Concentrate / Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMC Therapy / BMAC)

BMC therapy can be used to treat various orthopaedic injuries, including moderate to severe osteoarthritis and tendon injuries. Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) is similar to Concentrated Plasma Therapy but uses a concentrate of stem cells harvested from a patient’s own bone marrow, instead of using blood platelets. Bone marrow contains a rich reservoir of messenger signaling cells (stem cells) which aid repair as they are able to replicate themselves into various types of tissue.

Lipogems

Lipogems (body fat) can be used for the treatment of osteoarthritis. The procedure uses a patient’s own fat (adipose) tissue which is then combined with saline and injected back into the affected area to promote healing. Similar to Concentrated Plasma Therapy, nSTRIDE and BMC Therapy, Lipogems uses a patient’s own tissue to promote healing.

Bioplasty/Subchondroplasty

Bioplasty is used mainly for acute or chronic musculoskeletal injuries, including bone marrow lesions. This procedure can be used for pain from persistent bone bruises and osteoarthritis. It uses a mix of Concentrated Plasma Therapy and calcium phosphate, which upon injection helps to encourage bone repair.
