Mr Mellor visits Virtual Reality Laboratory

Mr Simon Mellor visited Charing Cross Hospital to meet Professor Cobb and Mr Logishetty at their Virtual Reality (VR) Laboratory. This facility is being used to help surgeons’ practice and train for routine and pioneering surgical procedures.

Mr Mellor trialled the VR operating theatre to perform a virtual ‘Total Hip Replacement’ using the muscle-sparing Anterior Approach technique. Mr Mellor has been using this technique on patients with very positive results – find out more about this technique here. In the very near future, it is anticipated that this VR system will be used on a regular basis to help train Orthopaedic surgeons in complex techniques such as hip and knee replacements.
